What is the importance of kids/teens getting 9-12 hours of sleep?

I heard that kids/teens need 9-12 hours of sleep at night for their brain to function correctly the next day. What does the brain need to do? What is the importance of this? I know that I rarely get that much sleep at night, I’m in Junior High, and I seem to be able to function the next day. Just wondering…

This sleep deficit impacts everything from a person’s ability to pay attention in class to his or her mood. Research shows that more than 20% of high school students fall asleep in class, and experts have been able to tie lost sleep to poorer grades. Lack of sleep also damages teens’ ability to do their best in athletics. (Plus who wants to be tired all day? Sleeping is like, freakin awesome!!)

Yeah- I am not sure who told you that- but you don’t need that much sleep!! You should get around 8 hours, but everyone is different. It is important to sleep enough for proper brain functioning and physical repair.
In the later stages of sleep (3&4), your body will physically repair itself (explains why you sleep so much when you feel sick). There is also the psychological aspect of sleep, REM (rapid eye movement- when you dream) sleep isn’t fully understood, but has to do with memory, and allowing your mind to make sense of the days occurences. If you feel tired all the time and need an alarm to wake up in the morning, you should probably be getting more sleep. If you feel good and are awake with no issues you are probably getting enough sleep! Hope this helps

so kids/teens will grow up……..
and can get more energy for the next day……
and kids/teens should sleep very early at night they won’t be stress and sometimes others just going to have a bad headache when they woke by sleeping late at night……
and they can’t actually think very well because they didn’t sleep well…………..
so it’s really important to sleep in 9-12 hours at night….
so they’ll grow up, rest and relax, so they don’t get a very very bad headache, so they don’t get very stressy in the whole day, and they can also think very well……..

We need more time to refuel because we are more active, and we are still growing. Our bodies just need more energy than young children or older adults.

You may function ok, but not at your prime perhaps! This is a period of rapid growth and your body needs to recuperate and regenerate moreso than if you were an adult who is fully grown. Old people require less sleep than anyone! The best sleep is the sleep you get before midnight, and sleeping after around 6 am is just a waste of time – so early to bed and early to rise has value!
